There’s no excuse not to have a go at party theming with the multitude of themes on offer all throughout the year. We’ve taken a look at the very best options, month by month...
January
January has some great themes on offer- Hogmanay celebrations often last through to the 1st or 2nd of the month and Burns Night festivities take place on the 25th so go all out with your Scottish theming- think haggis, scotch whiskey and tartan. You could even honour the great poet himself with a poetry reading.
Australia Day is celebrated on January 26th and commemorates the day the Aussies gained independence from the Brits. Take your theming down under with themed props such as kangaroos, wallabies and kookaburras and of course, a feast prepared freshly on the barbie.
February
February is without doubt the month of love. Host a Valentine’s Day party and theme your venue with lots of candles, roses and red or pink draping to create an amorous atmosphere for your partygoers to enjoy.
Chinese New Year often takes place in February too, so celebrate with a themed party full of ornate parasols, luxurious printed fabric, paper lanterns and oriental dragons. Treat guests to Chinese feast- if cooking is too much of a challenge you could always order in a takeaway!
For the sports fans out there, the Rugby Six Nations usually kick off in February too so why not host a rugby themed party? You could bring the outdoors in with Astroturf and dot rugby balls, sweatbands and fun flags all round the venue.
March
One of the biggest celebrations in March is St Patrick’s Day- the perfect opportunity to throw an Irish themed party. Use emerald green draping and leprechaun themed props to bring a spirit of fun to your event. Or, celebrate a different saint- St David- with a Welsh themed party. Daffodils, dragons and leeks are sure to transport partygoers to Cymru.
March also sees Mother’s Day celebrations taking place, so why not throw the lovely lady in your life a special party? Theme it with everything she likes, whether it’s pink or blue or flowers or football!
There’s also Crufts in March- a perfect excuse to celebrate man’s best friend with a dog-themed party full of canine treats, and the Cheltenham Festival, for which a horse racing themed party would go down a treat. Challenge your friends- ladies can have a ‘best hat’ competition while the men could dress up as jockeys and you could even use a racing DVD game to get guests in the horsey mood.
April
Celebrate Easter in April with exciting parties filled with treasure hunts, chocolate bunnies and chocolate eggs- perfect for the little ones but also lots of fun for adults too.
There’s also St George’s Day on the 23rd which gives you a perfect excuse to celebrate all things English. Transform your event venue into a traditional English pub with St George’s flag bunting, red and white balloons and of course, a dragon.
Keep with the English theming and celebrate Shakespeare’s Birthday on the 26th. Why not take your guests back in time to when the playwright was in his heyday- go all out with ruffles and collars and fancy Elizabethan costumes or have guests dress up as their favourite Shakespeare characters. You’ll have a room full of Romeos, Juliets, Hamlets and Orthellos!
May
Go all traditional in May with a May Day party and hire some Morris Dancers and a pretty Maypole as your centrepiece. Brighton Festival also takes place during May so what better time to pay homage to the ultimate seaside destination with a British Seaside themed party? Finally, and perhaps best of all, is the Eurovision Song Contest which takes place towards the end of the month. Go all out with a Euro party and have each guest represent a different country. They can dress up and you can provide food and music from each country!
June
June is a Royal month, with Queen’s Official Birthday taking place. Pay your respects with a royal themed party where all your guests can be princes, princesses, kings and queens for the day or night. June is also the month when thousands of people Glastonbury for a long weekend full of mud and music. You could celebrate the festival’s hippy roots with a flower power themed party.
July
Wimbledon comes to town in July so celebrate the traditional English competition with traditional English delicacies including sandwiches, strawberry scones and Pimms. Of course all guests should dress in tennis white too! Sticking with an active theme, The Ashes usually start in July too so why not make your July party a English sporting party?
August
There’s no way you can’t be in the party mood in August- it’s the month of the Carnival! Theming for a carnival celebration can be as crazy as you like, so let your mind run wild and plan for fun costumes, lots of dancing and Caribbean food.
August is also probably the best month to host a Summer themed party with the millions of people jetting off abroad for their holidays. You could go English Summer and transform your venue into a village green, ready for outside games and a BBQ or a sizzling Rio-style beach where guests can sip tropical cocktails and splash about in a paddling pool.
September
The kids return to school in September and you can too with a Back to School themed party! Giant pencils, chalkboards and school uniform fancy dress will set the scene for a party that will take you right back to your childhood.
There’s also London Fashion Week in September so bring out the repressed designer in you and host a fashion-themed party. Your guests can parade their own creations up and down a catwalk while you champagne in a very civilised manner.
October
Halloween is the ultimate October party theme. You can really go to town with spooky theming and transform your venue into a haunted, horror house to give even the bravest partygoers nightmares. You could even hire actors to play zombies and other ghouls or professional dancers to recreate the infamous Thriller dance routine.
For less dramatic events in October you could use a simple Autumn theme- perfect for weddings and corporate events. Pumpkins and rich-coloured leaves can make for beautiful themed decorations.
November
Remember, remember the Fifth of November- Bonfire Night is a great chance to throw a party. Celebrate the downfall of Mr Fawkes with sparkly, firework themed decorations and a twinkling starcloth backdrop.
Pay homage to our American cousins at the end of the month with a Thanksgiving party. Decorate your venue with American flags, pinecones, pumpkins and other Autumn foliage. Serve Turkey with cranberries to your guests for a really authentic feel too.
December
We’re sure you won’t need reminding but December truly is party season, what with Christmas and New Year taking place. Consider playing a twist on traditional Christmas party themes- why not host a Caribbean Christmas party or a have a Wild West event?
New Year is perhaps the ultimate party night of the year so go for glamour- sparkles, diamonds, black and white- whatever you fancy!
